Café of the Week: The Grounds of the City

There's something to be said about travelling into the city for a nice long lunch. To take an afternoon that's all about indulgence: delicious food, free-flowing bubbles or wine, great conversation and a chance to just let time slip by when there’s nowhere else you have to be. You'd be hard tasked to find a more vibrant venue in the Sydney CBD to enjoy said long-lunch than The Grounds of the City

Tucked away behind an impressive Art Deco façade inside The Galleries Victoria, this coffeehouse-inspired inner-city hub is set to transport you back to an era of old-school charm, with delicious food and drink options to match. Every detail in this grandiose interior is accounted for, from the plush velvet seating to the beautiful pink receipts served on silver trays, it's fair to assume the entire scene was an expensive creation.

For lunch, go big or go home. With a menu that offers something for everyone, the Grounds of the City is an obvious choice for a long boozy Friday lunch. The drinks menu is too extensive to ignore. Whether you're after coffee or a cocktail, the classics are executed in a masterful fashion with no detail left to chance, from the intricate latte art to the gourmet garnishes on the cocktails.

An ever changing selection of food specials are a bonus to an already enticing menu - think rich garden-fresh salads, cold and hot seafood plates, delicate pastas, craft burgers and grilled meats with mouth watering accompaniments. Our Steak with Black Truffle Mash was everything you could hope for in a steak, while our Butterflied Spatchcock with Parsnip Puree and Root Vegetables was both filling and delicious. A word to the wise: You'd be foolish not to leave room for desert. By now you will have noticed the photogenic dessert trolley, steered through the aisles by a tea lady, ready for people to flag down and order just-as-photogenic cakes from.

Nomad's Tip: Don't join the queue of suckers waiting outside - book ahead! The Grounds of the City takes online reservations Monday – Sunday for up to 8 people (if you have a larger group, simply give them a call).
