Restaurant of the Week: Rockpool Bar & Grill

“The cornerstone to good cooking is to source the finest produce”

– Neil Perry.

As Neil Perry’s culinary dynasty seems to be ever-growing, his commitment to these words can be seen as a cornerstone to his success. Nestled in the centre of Sydney’s CBD on Hunter Street, Perry's crown jewel that is Rockpool Bar & Grill awaits.

Rockpool Bar & Grill is the epitome of the ‘entire’ dining experience. Entry into the dim Art Deco high-ceilinged, marble pillared atrium transforms you and prepares you for what’s about to go down. A visit, however, would be incomplete without patronage of the connected bar; a bar in which the cocktails are not only creative, but strong.

When seated, the enormity of the food menu will no doubt excite and terrorise, but is also prime reasoning to return in the hopefully near future. The common tactic of forgoing one course to over-indulge in another is sadly impossible when at Rockpool Bar & Grill, with crucial dishes offered across entrées, mains, sides and of course, desert. To make matters worse, the task of choosing just one bottle from the extensive selection of over 3,000 wines on the wine list seems almost unthinkable. Luckily, the articulate Sommeliers seem to have a gift, as they will go out of their way to find the perfect wine to suit your tastes and price range.

On to the food. The 'Charcoal Roast King Prawns Split and Marinated' is an exquisite example of Perry’s dedication to his produce, truly at unbeatable quality for Australian seafood. A quick consultation with the knowledgeable and professional staff allows the perfect choice of their signature steak cuts, that is if the homemade pastas aren’t too tempting. The wide selection and shareability of the sides should see them studded across the table, with the Hand Cut Chips and Mac & Cheese guaranteed to be a popular choice.

The only way to complete the experience is with a desert wine or Irish coffee, paired with the carefully curated selection of Neil Perry’s signature petit fours and deserts. There's no question that Rockpool Bar & Grill is of world class standard, and when it comes to "must-visit" restaurants in Sydney, this fine dining favourite should be at the top of everyone's list.
