Restaurant of the Week: Woodland Kitchen & Bar
Owned and run by chef Damian Heads and his wife Jenni, Woodland Kitchen & Bar has been one of our go-to restaurants for years, as they consistently offer above-excellent food and service. Damian is a restaurant professional who has a wealth of experience from working in kitchens that include Fuel Bistro, Steel Bar & Grill and Pony Dining. Woodland Kitchen first opened in 2014 and has (unsurprisingly!) taken out the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Restaurant (informal) in the Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence 2017. It's no wonder; Woodland always delivers high quality, unpretentious modern fare.
A focal point of Woodland Kitchen is its slow-burning wood fired grill where most of it's pasture-fed free range meat and sustainable seafood is cooked to perfection.
For entrée, it's difficult to go past the Pan Sauteed Potato & Spinach Gnocchi with burnt butter, pinenuts, olives & goats curd, or, as a 'shared plate', the Grilled Haloumi with Hickory Smoked Tomato Relish. Don't fill up on too many starters, as the hearty mains are just as appetising.
Beautifully cooked mains from the grill include the Mirrool Creek Lamb Backstrap, which has subtle hints of smokiness, courtesy of the grill's ironbark coals. For fish lovers, the Tasmanian Salmon and the Pan Roasted King Reef Barramundi are always presented perfectly. If there's still some room left for desert, the home-style baked Apple Flan with frangipane and vanilla bean ice-cream is a treat. The restaurant also has a very reasonably priced cocktail menu and wine list, and also caters for BYO.
Woodland Kitchen is a stand-out from other restaurants in the vicinity. Neural Bay is blessed to have such a gem!
